MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ and the act of love for our fellow man. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not parish but have eternal life." John 3:16-17. Christmas is a joyous time! It is a time of giving. It is a time of fellowship and devotion.

It is sad that Christmas is more a commercial enterprise than a religious observance. For most people, Jesus isn’t the reason for the season, buying and receiving consumer goods is.

Every year we have a mad rush to get to the stores first to buy whatever hot items are on sale. I believe it was last year when an employee at a Wal-Mart died and a woman miscarried when the doors to the store opened. The man that died was trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors in a mad rush. You hear about fights breaking out in parking lots when someone took a spot that another was waiting for. People are known to fight for a popular gift if it's the last item on the shelf. Tempers flare as people prepare for Christmas, but yet the true meaning of Christmas should be about loving our fellow man--not hurting them. Christmas is not the time for impressing people. It is not the time to buy the hottest items. It is not the time to run someone over to get to the item before they do or steal it out of their hands just because you are stronger. This is the time to reflect on your life, to honor Jesus for whom this holiday was named.

Why don't we sit back, relax and find out what Christmas should mean to us. According to the Bible, the first Christmas angel appeared to Mary and told her that she would have a son called Jesus. Joseph was also visited by a Christmas angel who told him what his role in this world-changing event would be. When the Child was born, angels sang, a bright star lit up the eastern sky, and shepherds followed that star and came to see baby Jesus. They gave Him valuable and precious gifts to honor a king. Why would they do this? Because the Child was to be our Savior, Jesus the Christ. We have lost track of the most precious reason for this season. Perhaps this year we could stop and remember why we are actually celebrating Christmas. For just one precious bit of time, maybe we could take the time to thank the Lord for what He has done for us because it really is HIS birthday. Just one brief moment to tell Him we love Him since the season is all about LOVE and PEACE.

Have you ever wondered what the differences you made during your life are and how many lives you have touched? Perhaps if we think about this, at least during Christmas, we would all become better human beings and we would remember the reason for the season and carry it through the year.

Share your love with others and remember the reason for celebrating Christmas. Give thanks for the birth of Christ our Lord and love your fellow man. May the spirit of Christmas be in your heart and soul and carry you through any adversities that are in your life. Happy Birthday Jesus and Merry Christmas my readers, friends and family - I love you one and all!

Christmas is fast approaching and that means eating too much, fighting traffic, looking for parking places within a mile of the store, trying to get through the aisles of the stores along with the hundreds of other people in the mall, maxing out your credit cards, entertaining relatives, parties, family gatherings and a lot of other expected activities that add to your already busy schedule. In short that means stress and anxiety.

To relieve your stress try not to worry about Christmas being perfect. Think of it this way; it is the funny obscure things that happen that we remember, laugh and reminisce about, but we forget about the times where everything was perfect. Memories are made when something happens out of the ordinary--otherwise it's just another holiday that we forget about.

Give yourself a break, cut yourself some slack and learn to say "NO". You don't have to attend every party that you are invited to; you don't have to buy the perfect gift (gift cards are an easy way to finish your shopping quickly); you don't have to do all the cooking--a honey baked ham, some frozen vegetables, and store bought rolls and pies from the grocery store could be a great meal or invite people to bring their favorite dish so you are not responsible for everything. It always amazes me how long it takes to put a meal together, but in only fifteen minutes the food has been eaten and you are ready to put the dishes in the dish washer. Far too much prep time for the amount of time that is spent eating.

It is inevitable that you will get stressed out and frustrated during the holiday season and it is okay, but just remember an important tip and that is to breath. Breathing is an ideal way to relieve stress and it is simple and free and can be performed any where and at any time. Another way to relieve stress is to ask yourself at the end of the day, "What did I do well, and what could I do better next time?" That way instead of criticizing yourself, you are praising yourself, realizing that you are doing the best you can and in a loving way looking for a better way to do something next time.

Ask yourself "What is really important?" If you don't have the funds to buy your child the toy they said they just can't live without, if you go ahead and buy it, is it worth getting in debt over and worrying about how you are going to pay the upcoming bills? Sit your children down and explain to them that times are tough right now and hopefully next year you will be able to make it up to them. If you are late for the bosses party, if the sales person is rude, if someone takes the parking space you have been waiting for, is it really important enough to stress about? Life is too short and those things could be forgotten about, but if you hold onto them you will create stress, lose sleep and won't be in a good state of mind. You need to try and maintain your own sense of well-being and let go of the things you have no control over. And most of the things we fret about are really quite small in the grand scheme of things.

Most importantly remember the true meaning of Christmas and why we celebrate it. Perhaps if you keep that in mind your stress of wanting to have a perfect Christmas will become secondary to your ability to appreciate the birth of Christ, the love of your family and you'll have a stress free holiday season.

This is a joke inspired by a spoof in regional television yesterday.

Interviewer : Welcome, Sir! Its Christmas time and how is Santa Claus in Pakistan?

Chief : How dare you accuse Pakistan, Santa Claus is not in Pakistan!

Interviewer : Sir, but Santa Claus is a big man with long white beard who...

Chief : Even if he has a long white beard, how can you tell that he is a Pakistani????

Interviewer : Sir,sir.. Santa Claus is the one who goes around the world spreading peace

Chief : Even if he crosses borders without proper documents, how can you say that he is a Pakistani???
